The cantilevered carport or canopy is a covered area without the need for poles or posts and no grounds works are required. Maximum projection from wall 3629mm (11' 9").
A dual pitched (back-to-back) system is available however with post support to provide a maximum projection of 7258mm (23' 8"). Customers often buy a carport or a canopy of this design due to the aesthetic appeal of its peaked roof.
Beams
Our cantilever beams are hand laminated in Glass Reinforced Polyester (a modern-day version of fibreglass) to a specification suiting each individual project in a full-range of colours including where necessary, special projections, moulded-in cutouts, and individual beam load requirements.
Each outside beam has a gutter end trim fitted to collect water and feed it forward to the main guttering system. Roof sheet fixings are unseen from the underside of the beams. This gives a more finished appearance to the canopy.
With this flexibility we are able to offer our clients a made-to-measure product, not possible with only standard sizes.
Sheeting
The GRP roofing sheets (85% translucent) are machine formed to an exclusive profile with co-extruded ultraviolet filter. This sheeting is designed by our own R&D department to provide maximum strength with an expected service life of 30yrs. Our sheeting conforms to all relevant British Standards including a class-3 fire rating.
Wall fixings
Wall fixings for our cantilever canopies and carports are manufactured by Hilti Great Britain. These would normally be mechanical (20mm diameter) or chemical anchors depending on the base material to which the beams are being fixed. Where necessary, in-house we have the facility to conduct onsite pullout load testing.
Fascia
Fascias as standard are in structural grade alloy 6082T6 (BS1474), powder coated (BS6496). Although a plastic fascia would be cheaper, it is liable to buckling and would spoil an otherwise highly specified product.
Brackets
On occasion circumstances dictate that load-spreading brackets are required. These brackets are fabricated in grade-43 steel, galvanised (BS EN ISO 1461) and powder coated (BS6496). This finishing of the brackets is to a marine specification and will not require any maintenance. Brackets are only added to a carport or canopy where necessary so as to comply with BS6399 part3, therefore ensuring the canopy's structural stability. Any shortcut of this process is highly inadvisable.
Planning & Building Regulations
GRP Canopies are now in partnership with the local authority building control (LABC), which covers all of England and Wales. Where the surface area of the proposed structure is in excess planned view of 30 meters squared, there is a legal obligation for Building Regulations to be obtained from your Local Council. This is an obligation under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 which we are both required to comply. All structures that we install that require Building Regulations will require structural calculations.
If planning or building regulations are required for a school canopy or covered area, GRP Canopies can also undertake this for you offering a complete turnkey solution.Â
